La gestión ambiental efectiva de botaderos requiere una comprensión detallada de la geología del subsuelo para prevenir la contaminación y mitigar riesgos. Métodos geofísicos avanzados, como el Análisis Multicanal de Ondas Superficiales (MASW), están demostrando ser herramientas valiosas para caracterizar estos sitios. 

El siguiente artículo presenta un caso de estudio que ilustra cómo MASW puede aplicarse para mapear la roca madre y detectar zonas de fractura, información crítica para evaluar la integridad de las barreras naturales en botaderos aplicación que se consideró en el Botadero de Karakara, considerando rocas impermeables vs. rocas fracturas: a fin de poder diferenciar areniscas silícicas impermeables que actúan como barreras naturales por su porosidad primeria, y las zonas fracturadas por su porosidad secundaria que podrían permitir la migración de lixiviados. La velocidad de la onda de corte (Vs) es un parámetro clave: las rocas sanas y compactas mostrarán altas velocidades de Vs, mientras que las zonas fracturadas tendrán velocidades más bajas.
